Base Station and Control Equipment Used By Michigan State Police

Note, the items on this page are not intended to be an in depth history of each manufacturer's piece of equipment, only showing the variety of what was used at radio towers and posts over the years and what needed to be maintained by the communication technicians.

AM & CW

First AM receivers used by the Michigan State Police came from Sparks - Withington Co. Jackson, MI.  Spartan Model 10.

First CW receivers used were the National HRO-RS.

Later HRO-50T1's were added to the system.

Early to mid sixties the HRO receivers
 were replaced with Hallicrafters SX-117s

FM Equipment

The first installations of FM equipment was all Motorola, first units used 100-TH finals and a little later 4-125s.

As system was added to, many GE Mastr Pro base stations were installed.

Motorola 330 Watt base used at 250 Watts for MSP.  These used conduction cooled tubes.

Some time around mid eighties the MSP radio techs took over maintenance of Motor Carrier Division bases and mobiles, many of the Weigh Stations had the Mastr Pro Desk Mates.

RCA ML1000s were used to replace several older radios.

The GE Master II was also used to replace older radios.

Special Radio

The odd looking radio was a special order from Motorola built after the 1967 riots in Detroit.  During the riot every MSP car and command post was on 42.580 and 42.480. Was a mess, cars taking over each other etc.  The radio was a rush order and was a 9 channel UHF transceiver.  It was kept at Detroit but  never got used.  The UHF H.T.s where used a lot for special details, gun training and loaned out to the DNR for a shooting program for kids.  Used at the state fair.
