A major point of Police
Communications is just simply, a portion will never be developed which
is the City and County angle of our radio public services. For
instance, Pittsburgh, Memphis, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit and
Buffalo. All mentioned had thriving communications presence on the
APCO CW and phone police network. Far too much information has been
lost.
Memphis Police Department alone had a major presence on the Police
Intercity Communication Net because of its importance to access the
State of Tennessee and surrounding areas that lacked service to points
in Texas, Mississippi, Georgia and Florida. The teletype net westward
still had not been developed in the west and southwest by the second
World War.
Our radio officers at Columbus Ohio often commented on the quality and
efficiency of the operators at Memphis Police Department Radio Staff.
Also that it was the only gate open into that region. In the 1940s
Memphis Police had a total of 471 officers on their payroll and was
known as the Murder Capital of the World.
Present Memphis Police history on line is void of their once very
capable police communications.
The engineering force, the operators and technicians are but memory to
only a very few of us left.
Circa 1942 APCO renders some history of Memphis PD (WPEC) watch
frequencies HF CW 2466 - 2804 - 2812 - 5195 - 5140 5135 and 7935
KHZ. A permanent monitor on 30.58 MHZ on the FM band.
May these thoughts and information be built upon and once again be
brought to our attention and make known the once proud service.
Photographs, material and comments are always welcome.
