Work History by Robert Gabbard

I was hired on
October 1, 1959. George
Dodge and Lt. Clarence Spawr interviewed me.
I was 19 years old. I
had not taken the Civil Service Test so I was hired as a provisional
employee. I took the test
and was certified on May 5, 1960.
The title was Police Radio Operator A1.
I worked at the Old Redford Post (Detroit).
In August of 1964 I was called to active duty in the U.S. Navy
and sent to the Naval Communication Station, Sabana Seca, Puerto Rico.
I was a Communications Technician.
Harry Warner was hired to replace me while on military leave.
I returned to State Service in September 1966 at the Redford
Post. In 1967 I was
promoted to Radio Technician 1 and transferred to the Paw Paw District
Headquarters. I worked
with Stacy Thompson. This
position was that I worked as a Radio Operator on Monday afternoons
and for vacation relief for the other operators.
Tuesday thru Friday I was a Radio Technician.
On September 1, 1968 I was promoted to Radio Technician 2 and
transferred back to Detroit. Back at Detroit
I was promoted to Radio Technician 10 in 1975 and made Shop
Supervisor. In 1976 they
built a new District Headquarters and Crime Lab and Post in Northville
and we moved there. I believe it
was in 1995 that I was assigned the Third District along with the
Second District as a Supervisor. I finally
retired from Northville in April of 1996 after 36 and half years
almost all in the Second District. It
seemed like just about all the technicians spent some time at Detroit
before moving along to a location of their choice or they got tired of
me. |
